Nicaragua Action Researh

Off to Nicaragua tomorrow. Exciting Action Research project will begin tomorrow.

Working with Colorado Technical University in partnership with a nonprofit group (Inner Change Works) my students will provide assessment, strategy assistance and intervention design for an ongoing computer donation program which provided 300+ computers to schools, libraries, health centers, and prisons in Nicaragua. We will travel toNicaragua for one week to observe, study, hold workshops and collect data. An online course was designed and implemented which extends the “live classroom” atmosphere in the country and when we return to our homes. The online part of the blended course provides discussion forums, readings, materials, and applications, pertaining to the implications of cross cultural research and the practice of assessment observations, interviews and data collection techniques. We are all using social media to report on our experiences and any projects that result.

Ideas for simple educational/learning products using available software

As part of an action research project, my students will be working with teachers, librarians and community leaders in Nicaragua to improve their interaction and usage with iMacs that are part of a donation program. These iMacs are older and some do not connect to the internet even if it is available. Most teachers already know and use the jeopardy game that is based on powerpoint. But there are other ways that these commonly available software products can be used in classrooms or 3rd educational places. Both word and pages, can be used for keeping work diaries, making posters, flyers and brochures, stories, reports. Excel and numbers are useful for putting in calculations, making projections, creating charts. Powerpoint and keynote both work for storytelling (especially those that contain graphics), simple games (like jeopardy), flash cards, presentations, quick quizes, picture and photo interpretations. I hope to come up with other ideas to use basic software to create lessons and learning exercises that do not require an internet connection.

Saw this link on CNN about this book; http://www.informationdiet.com/?cnn=yes This is a unique way of explaining why intelligent people seem to be acting against their own best interests and are completely missing the main points. Go to Amazon and read the excerpts from this book: The Information Diet: A Case for Conscious Consumption by Clay Johnson. The analogies and metaphors are amazing.
